EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Maryland High School Assessments (HSA) – What Parents, Communities, Churches, Civic Associations, etc. Need To Know - NO PASS, NO DIPLOMA

1. Beginning with the class of 2009 (today’s high school 9th graders), all Maryland students must pass four High School Assessment tests (HSAs) in order to qualify to graduate from high school and receive a High School Diploma. The High School Assessments, or HSAs, are four tests, one each in English 10, Algebra, Biology, and U. S. Government. The student will take each test as he or she completes the course.

2. If a student fails one or more of the HSA tests (and does not receive a certain preset minimum total score of 1602), that student will: (a) NOT graduate from high school, and (b) NOT receive a High School Diploma.

3. This is urgent! We must prepare and support our 9th graders today (as well as our 8th graders, 7th graders, etc.) to succeed on the coming HSA tests. NO PASS, NO DIPLOMA! No diploma for thousands of our Prince George’s County children is bad news for a student, his/her family, community and County.

4. High school students must study, take and pass the required tests in English 10, Algebra, Biology, and US Government. The HSA tests are given every year, in May. Because today’s 9th graders will be high school seniors in 2009, a 9th grader has at least four opportunities to pass the four tests. Middle school students may take/pass the HSA Algebra tests.
